Our Children are Eating too much Sugar

19th January 2016

Our children are eating too much sugar.

So what can we do to combat this?

It has been widely reported that children, particularly under 5’s, are routinely eating too much sugar. As parents/carers you are ideally placed to educate your little ones and promote a healthier lifestyle. These three tips will help you to encourage future generations to consume a healthier diet.

  1. Reduce sugar intake. A great place to start is with Public Health England’s new ‘Sugar Smart App’ @ www.gov.uk/government/news/5-year-olds-eat-and-drink-their-body-weight-in-sugar-every-year This brilliant tool checks how much sugar is in your food and gives guidance on daily allowances, you can download this for free from the app store or play store.

  1. Control portion sizes. Do you know how much yourr children should be eating? Baby Centre have put together a useful guide @ www.baby.co.uk/life_and_home/how-much-should-your-toddler-be-eating-portion-sizes-for-1-4-year-olds
  2. Get some inspiration for healthy food that children can’t resist @ uk.pinterest.com/ConnectCC/healthy-food-that-children-cant-resist/ This board shows some great ways to encourage young children to opt for healthy snacks.
